Seven Quick Takes, vol 4

#1. I had a baby appointment this week -- which I rather enjoy when I don't have to bring my kids. My sister-in-law kindly watched the girls for me -- which meant she had seven kids 4 and under on her hands for over two hours! She's amazing. Anyway, the baby is already head down like a good baby should be. :) I had my glucose blood test while I was there and I was so excited that the midwives let me drink 50g worth of glucose from regular orange juice, not that nasty artificially-flavored "grape" or "orange" soda I've had to gag down with the two other pregnancies. I scheduled all my other appointments up through 41 weeks and it was kind of surreal to think how soon that time will be here! #2. Every fall since we've had Turtle we've taken a family trip to a beautiful historical area about 1+ hrs from us. We haven't gone yet this year because the weekends have been rainy. And now this weekend's weather is looking bad too. Rain is possible ...

Seven Quick Takes, vol 3

# 1. Well, I have been ushered into my third trimester with a vengeance. Literally, the day I crossed the six-month mark, lower back and hip pain set in. That first day, I could barely lift Rosebud, bend over or even walk. Thankfully, it has been a bit better since then. But still as every night it gets harder to sleep and every day harder to manoveur, and I remember that the 30 week mark was about when I wanted out last time , I'm wondering whether that sentiment will soon win out over the "I'm-so-terrified-of-having-three-kids" sentiment . . . #2. Speaking of harder to manoveur, I have started inwardly swearing every time I try and squeeze through my bathroom door. I have to turn sideways and suck in my stomach or slowly slide my hips in at just the right angle to fit between the door and the sink. Is this going to a be a problem, you think?? #3. This week we finally went and got some pumpkins. The girls were SO excited and we had alot of fun. Turtle s...

Five Years Ago Today . . .

. . . I was given a diamond ring. :) It was the last weekend of fall break. I had been the sickest that I can remember with strep and scarlet fever the entire break. I hadn't been able to swallow food or get up off the couch in days. I was only on the second chapter of a 3-chapter senior thesis that was due in 8 days. I could only write a sentence or so at a time on my laptop because I literally could not focus. And to top it off I kept hearing rumors from various friends that my boyfriend was going to ask me to marry him "very soon." And it was only making me feel panicky and apprehensive. So, when he called to ask me to go out for a picnic on the Sunday before school resumed, the words burst out of my mouth: "Yes, but only if you promise not to ask me to marry you then." He was stunned. (And very annoyed at me, I found out later.) But I was sick, and stressed and overwhelmed and was really tired of hearing "He's gonna ask yoooou . . . .!" from e...

This gives me chills of awe

Holy See Welcomes Anglican Christians into Catholic Church The last paragraph reads: "In the midst of the darkness of the hour the Catholic Church has done what she has done for over two millennia, shine the light of the Truth to offer the way to salvation for all the Nations. The Church is not some optional organizational “extra” we fashioned, she is the Body of Christ, the new world, the seed of the Kingdom to come, the place where all men and women can find their fulfillment and the only path to authentic peace. The prayer of the Son of God “May They Be One” (John 17) still echoes and heaven itself is responding. Today’s historic news is the sign of the coming plan of that loving God who “…so loved the world that He sent His Only Son”. (John 3:16) "

New Work on Our Shelves

Semi-new, anyway. :) I never do get around to posting these soon after I put them out. Bead Threading Rosebud threads the pony beads onto the pipe cleaner. (I hot-glued one bead to the end of the pipe cleaner to stop the other beads from sliding off.) The idea for this work is one I stole from a toddler Montessori directress I used to work with. It is perfect preparation for lacing works. Rosebud is challenged by the small beads -- enough so that she has to really concentrate to succeed (not a strong point with her :), yet lacing with a string is still too hard for her to do on her own. This is my favorite work. :) Magnetic/Non-Magnetic The child sorts the items into two categories ("magnetic" and "non-magnetic") using the magnet to determine which one. I made the magnetic "fishing pole" from a popsicle stick and a broken fridge magnet and then collected fourteen items, seven for each of the two categories. The Magnetic column has (top to bottom) a chain,...
