Lenten Friday

A year ago I wrote this post about our way of saying the Stations of the Cross during Lent. Part of what I wrote was this: I think that the sensory experience of the light and darkness, the flickering shadows, the hushed prayers of so many childhood Lenten Fridays, have given me a love for the opportunity to withdraw into a dark, shadowed corner, as it were, alone with the suffering Christ. I retain from those days a desire for these sacred stations to be hushed, a quiet personal examination of conscience, a whispered sorrow in the "heart's room." I smile a little wryly as I re-read this post now. Our stations are so different this year! But how wonderful they still are, in their own way. This year we are joining with friends, another family with a young toddler, to pray these prayers together, the three of them, and the four of us. "Alone", "hushed" and "quiet" it surely is not! One Week Till Lent

My plans for Lent with the girls are simple. I plan on trying this Almsgiving activity from Lacy's blog as a new component of our Lent. We will box up our Alleluia. We will say the Stations of the Cross in our home on Fridays as we have done every year. And I am holding on to empty cardboard boxes to make a cross to give each girl on Ash Wednesday that they can begin to decorate as we progress toward Easter. This is an explanation of this "Stickers on the Cross" activity, a repost from last year : I wanted to share something from our home that we are doing to prepare for Easter this year. How We are Celebrating Holy Week

This week, we have veiled all the holy images and statues, as a sign of mourning and sensory deprivation. Turtle is a little disturbed by this practice, and sometimes has to lift the veil covering pictures in her room when she doesn't like not seeing them any more. For me, however, I love the visual reminder in every room of the house of the somberness of this beautiful week. We've made some "holy pretzels," as the girls call them. We said the following prayer as we sprinkled them with holy water: We beg you, O Lord, to bless these pretzels which are to remind us that Lent is a sacred season of penance and prayer. For this very reason, the early Christians started the custom of making these breads in the form of arms crossed in prayer. Thus they kept the holy purpose of Lent alive in their hearts from day to day, and increased in their souls the love of Christ, even unto death, if necessary.
